Spring Break In Italy

Each year, the graduating 8th grade class at St. Francis School takes a trip to Italy. Please enjoy Zoe Watts' account of this year's trip...

Normally, when you ask a typical 8th grader how their spring break went, you’re not expecting an answer like, “I went scuba diving in Australia!” or “I went floating down the Amazon and got attacked by a crocodile!” or “I went half way across the world and saw a bunch of ancient temples and churches!”. But that's what I did, and I can tell you it was a lot more fun than staying home and playing video games for a week. For my 2011 spring break, most of my fellow 8th grade class members and I went to Italy. It was a lot of fun and a great experience. Not a lot of thirteen and fourteen year old kids get to go to Italy. I can tell you, it's an amazing feeling, getting on a bus in the morning and thinking about the trip ahead of you. Knowing that you won't have your cell phone, or mom, or TV is exciting but daunting. You don't even use the same type of money, electrical plugs or bathrooms in Italy. There are new sights, food, sounds, customs and language to see. A whole new world awaits.

I did a lot of things on this spring break, that I haven't done before. I ate cow stomach sandwich, walked through thousand year old churches with gold mosaics, stood in St. Marks Square and listened to the bells, saw a bunch of diseased saints in a crypt at the Vatican and got yelled at in a German airport. When you land in the Venice airport, you meet your guide and gather your luggage, but it takes time, (sometimes days) to register the fact that you're half way across the earth from home. You really gain a sense of independence, which stays with you when you come back home. Walking with four friends, in a “strange” country, alone with no adults around helps you to be more responsible and independent. Shopping, trying new foods and exploring the ancient temples is exciting and educational. Italy is a maze. You'll be walking down a Venice street, and come across a square. You pass shops, pigeons, people, street vendors, and then suddenly, a beautiful old church, randomly situated next to a gelato store appears.

The three most unique things about Europe and the U.S. are the daily life, food and culture. First of all, 9:00 pm in America is 4:30 am in Rome. If you’re looking for jet-lag, the other side of the world is the place to be. (Curse you science!) The food, gelato, pasta, pizza and even soda are different from the U.S. Authentic Italian pizza and gelato are a lot better than the American style. (It's also only 2.50 euros for three giant scoops of gelato plus whipped cream!) The pasta and pizza have their own original taste too. The pasta is the best ever. (I could honestly tell you, for a page, about how amazing Italian pasta is). Unfortunately, the three euro per can soda was more costly than what we're used to paying.. Lastly, the culture is so much different. Although most of it's in Italian, you hear snatches of conversation, and it dawns on you how different life in Europe is from the U.S. You meet new people, and make stronger bonds with the ones you already know. Italy is a very inspiring place.

The architecture in Italy is gorgeous. Venice is the epitome of the stereotypical Italy. In Venice the houses are tall, old, and beautiful. The streets are narrow, but you never know when you'll turn the corner and come across a magnificent canal or bridge. Then, of course, you can't go to Venice without taking a gondola ride. The places we went to were all unique. They almost had their own “personalities”. Ravenna, Florence (Firenze, known for the leather) and Rome (Ravenna on steroids). Rome is know for the temples, Roman ruins, and the Vatican City, but they were all special. Then there's Assisi. Down in the town, there is no speed limit or side walks, but there are stray dogs and shops. Then you'll turn a corner and see an ancient church. On my trip, the group and I traveled to a hermitage, where St. Francis prayed. The only noise is bird's chirping and if you sit quietly and listen, you can feel at one with nature and yourself. It sounds incredibly corny but its really serious. It's honestly the most peaceful place I've ever been. No cars or other city noises. (It sure beats my bedroom at home).

If you ever get the chance to go to Italy, choose it over staying home and playing “Call of Duty”. You may not think it at the time, but about a week after you return, you start thinking about a lot of things. The memories, the feelings, the friends you made, the lessons you learned, and that special feeling you had, as the plane took off... “I'm leaving my country, my language, my home, to explore something new in Europe...” . You learn a lot from the culture, surroundings and the country. Its one of those experiences you look back to, five years later and think, “I remember that!” or “Remember when...” then burst into tears. (It's more emotional then you think). Overall, my spring break was pretty awesome. I'll never forget any part of it, the memories, food, feelings and the friends.

8 Days Across the Ocean

Each year, the graduating 8th grade class at St. Francis School takes a trip to Italy. Below are Katerina Libera's memories of this year's trip...

March 9, 2011. That's the day we packed up and flew across the ocean. That's the day we were introduced to new culture. That's the first day I'd ever been out of the U.S. That one day held so many adventures, who would have thought? To everyone else, March 9th was just another Wednesday. But not to me. No, March 9th was the day that everything changed for me.

My spring break started off a little funky. An atypical spring break in my eyes. Being new to St. Francis, I hadn't truly been waiting long enough for this. Some kids have waited, are waiting for this day for years and for some, years to come. Nothing can truly prepare you for such an event. No words of advice can even begin to prepare you for what was going to happen. It would be different than any other spring break. The next week would be unusual beyond description. And it all started on March 9, 2011.

Did I deserve this? I certainly hadn't waited as long as most people. I definitely didn't prepare months in advance. I was going across the ocean for 8 days! Why was I getting to do this while other people were in school and others at work? There was something off about the way I was feeling. Sure, I was lucky and VERY grateful, but something beyond that. Maybe I felt guilty. To be honest, I wasn't excited. Any other kid could have taken my spot, but I was going to another country and I wasn't excited!? I could have been scared or homesick (before I had left home..?), maybe I wasn't comfortable with change. I can't really tell you, because those all may be excuses for my lack of excitement. Whether I was excited or not, nothing would have helped me foresee the crazy events that would happen in the days to come.

I knew that I'd get to learn more about a completely different culture. I'd get to "live" there for 8 days. I knew that there would be things I missed about America. I knew I'd be exhausted and tired. I knew what just about everyone else knew. But it didn't hit me, it was too surreal. I had fun watch my friends learn along with me. Everything that was talked about before the trip was right in front of me. I touched the Doge's Palace, climbed the Spanish Steps, saw the home of St. Francis. I was in Italy, and nothing could ever be so awe striking. To me, nothing would ever be impossible again.

Today, I wear a different smile, a different attitude. Today, I walk a little differently and see things in a different view. Why me? March 9, 2011. The first day of the next 8 across the ocean in another country.

Book Fair Carnival ~ Your Ticket to Read!

Book Fair Carnival ~ Your Ticket to Read, opens Saturday, April 30th, from 10:30 am-1:30 pm, in the Cafetorium. (Use the doors from the parking lot into the gym.) Step right up, one and all, to enjoy free hot dogs, lemonade and carnival games. There will be plenty of supervision and prizes awarded hourly for game winners. So, come with family and friends to leisurely shop for all your summer reading.

The Book Fair will also be held Monday, May 2nd through Thursday, May 5th, in the Cafetorium from 7:45 am to 6 pm. We will have offerings for the entire school with an expanded selection of adult reading materials, just in time for Mother's Day and a table for each grade's summer reading list.

Your child will visit the Book Fair with his or her class. You may send money with your child to spend then or send it on another day to be spent before or after school. Teachers will have recommendations and wish boxes for you to select items for their classroom.

"Race to Nowhere"

Race to Nowhere is a call to action for families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. Dear Parents,

As we make our way through February, I wanted to remind you of a few projects. As you know, the Board and many committed parents are working very hard to raise needed funds for the upcoming renovations to the school. We will begin this project on March 1st. In order to make this a success, we must look to you, the parents, to help support these renovations. We are asking every family to make a donation of any amount to the capital campaign. It is imperative that every family support this project. Please give what you can.

Additionally our annual fundraising event is coming up in two short weeks. Please join us for this fun evening! Each year our St. Francis parents and friends gather to celebrate the school community. Our school is only as strong as the community that supports it. This event is always a highlight of the school year for me, and I hope for you, too. Please purchase tickets and join us in support. The theme for this year’s event is “A Night in Old Spain,” and you will be treated to tapas, sangria, silent and live auctions, dancing and entertainment.

SFS Basketball Camp is a wonderful opportunity for fun and skills improvement for any student ages 7-13 years old. As you know, we will be breaking ground in Summer 2011 on 7 new classrooms and new restrooms in the middle school wing. We are also going to renovate our kitchen, cafetorium, art room, computer lab, and science rooms. Please contribute to the "Space to Excel" Capital Campaign to help make this project a reality!

The sale will be held at the school tomorrow, November 13th, from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. Proceeds will support our current 8th graders’ trip to Italy and the Madeline Anderson Italy Scholarship Fund. Come on out and support our 8th graders!

Fall Food Drive @ SFS

Please give generously and help us reach our goal of collecting 350 lbs of food for our annual St. Francis Fall Food Drive. Many in our community go without, and we can take a small step to help. Tomorrow is our last day to collect non-perishable food items to donate as a community to the Food Bank of Central Texas to those in need.

What foods should I collect?

* Items with non-breakable packaging (no glass please)

This year’s Chili Cook-Off was a great time for everyone and a chance to sample some of the best chili Texas has to offer! This year there were 36 entries, a record for St. Francis!

Everyone's chili was unique and delicious. The decor was fabulous. From crazy to elegant, you could see that all contestants put a lot of thought and consideration into their area.

The band rocked the gym! Mr. Warner is very talented and folks were dancing their way between the chili crock pots. The kids had a great time too…from face painting to the coloring contest, many prizes were awarded throughout the event. The winner of the Nintendo Wii raffle was Michael Cook (8th grade).

Most of all, the St. Francis family came together to support the 8th grade Italy trip. We tripled the amount raised last year, which will help pay for some of the costs incurred by the school for such a wonderful experience for our kids.

The judges were almost cross-eyed after tasting all the entries, but they persevered and came up with the winners.

We thank everyone so much for coming out and making this the best year yet!

A BIG Book Fair THANK YOU!

We want to thank YOU for making the Book Fair such a huge success!

When the decorations first went up, I overheard a child asking another student why the school was hanging "POW!" and "KABOOM!" signs from the ceiling. The 1st grader answered very excitedly, “It’s for the Book Fair! Reading makes you a hero."

I don't think I could have said it any better. I want to thank you for everything you do to support reading at St. Francis. You read to them, load them up with good books, and help them become the life-long readers we all want them to be. You also support our faculty’s efforts with donations to the classroom and the library.

With your support, we raised approximately $3,500!

We could not have done this without our volunteers. I want to thank the following volunteers who donated their time, including many of our kids, who kept coming to us asking how they could help.

"Reading Saves the Day" BOOK FAIR

The "Reading Saves the Day" Book Fair opens THIS SATURDAY, September 11th, from 9am – Noon. Join us in your superhero cape to shop for PreK - Adult books. (Please enter the cafetorium from the SFS parking lot.)

We will have muffins and juice, cartoons, games and an illustrator drawing comic book characters. So bring your friends, family and grandparents before or after the soccer game. We’ll supervise the little ones while you get to drink Starbucks and leisurely shop.

Each teacher will have a box of books from which you can choose for your child’s classroom use. Simply choose the book(s) you want to donate, affix a bookplate in it with your designee, and have your child deliver your gift to their teacher.

"Transition to High School" Follow-up Session

On Thursday, April 15th from 5pm to 6pm, Jeffrey Swan and Matthew Zemo will make a follow up presentation on high school graduation plans and accommodations in the school library. Last week’s session was extremely well received and this week’s information will be beneficial, even if you were able to attend the first session.

Topics will include:

- Special Education (IEP’s and accommodations)
- 504 Accommodations
- Communicating with teachers about specific student needs
- Assessments for qualifying for special services

This informational and engaging learning opportunity is an amazing opportunity for the parents of St. Francis students.

Relationship Development Intervention

As part of April's "Parent Learning Opportunities" series, we invite interested parents to join us on Wednesday, April 14th at 8:30 am in the school library for a presentation on Relationship Development Intervention (RDI). RDI is an internationally known and utilized system with many success stories across the globe.

Remediation implies that we are embarked on a long-term marathon, not a sprint; a systematic process of correcting deficits to the point where they no longer constitute obstacles to reaching one’s potential and attaining a quality of life. Remediation provides children a second chance to master areas where developmental disability would otherwise lead to life-long marginalization and failure. When we remediate, we purposely focus on the person’s greatest areas of weakness. On a neural level, remediation in RDI means deliberately developing the brain’s capacity for integration and productive neural collaboration.

We are excited to present an opportunity for parents of students in kindergarten through 3rd grade to learn more about the adoption of the Singapore Math program at St. Francis School. This school year, we’ve fully implemented Singapore Math in grades K-2; in 3rd grade we have supplemented the existing Saxon Math program with Singapore Math’s strong arithmetic foundation.

On Wednesday, April 21st, from 6:00 – 7:15 pm, Morgan Patterson, an elementary math specialist and experienced Singapore math trainer, will present an overview of Singapore Math and its key features, as well as an introduction to fundamental elementary math principles, and talk with you specifically about the goals of the highly acclaimed and results-based Singapore Math program.

In order to achieve our educational mission of turning out highly capable and confident math students who enjoy math, it’s essential that parents, teachers, and administration are working together toward this shared goal. We hope that this presentation will help you feel more knowledgeable and connected to your child’s math education. You’ll also leave with invaluable insights into how to best help your child succeed in math both at school and at home.

Student Anastasia McElroy is collecting coats to be donated to "Coats for Kids." Anastasia has set the wonderful goal of collecting 364 coats - one coat for every student at St. Francis. Holiday Concert

Please join Kindergarten through 4th grade for this year's Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 3rd in the Barnes Gymnasium.

Wednesday and Thursday, November 18th & 19th the fair will be open from 7:30 am - 6pm. On Grandparents Day, Friday, November 20th, the fair is open from 7:30am -
3:30pm.

Funds raised through the Pinnacle Project go towards scholarships, teacher retention, student services, and facilities maintenance. HOWL - This Saturday!

The HOWL is fast approaching! This Saturday, October 24th from 4 pm - 7 pm, the St. Francis community will come together for our best family-friendly fundraiser of the year. Don't miss it!

A few last minute reminders:
- We need volunteers to help out! Please sign up on the sign-up sheets in the school lobby. You may also email Gin Tolany, Volunteer Chair, at vtolany@gmail.com.

- Bring your cakes and stuffed animals for the Cake Walk and the Zoo. Cakes and animals can be dropped off at the back door of the Little Gym on Friday, October 23rd. Don't forget that cakes will be judged: Spookiest Ghost cake, Scariest Spider cake, and "HOWLiest" Wolf cake.

- We need ice chests for the HOWL Cafe. Ice chests can be dropped off in the Little Gym on Friday, October 23rd. Please remember to put your name on your ice chest so that we are able to return it to you.

- Arrive in STYLE! Park in the parking lots near the school and take the Hay Ride to safely arrive at the front gate of the HOWL. The Hay Ride is two tickets per passenger.

- The HOWL Rally will take place on Friday morning at 10:45 am in the Barnes Gymnasium. Be sure to wear your HOWL t-shirt and look for an appearance by a special guest!

- Want a chance to see the Cowboys play in their new stadium? Buy a raffle ticket for your chance to win tickets to a Cowboys game OR to see Notre Dame play in San Antonio. Tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100.

Danny Herman
Danny Herman is an internationally recognized director, choreographer, actor and teacher. Mr. Herman appeared in the original Broadway and Off-Broadway productions of Contact, and was Mike Costa on Broadway in A Chorus Line. He also appeared in the original Broadway production of Leader of the Pack, the original New York City Opera production of Die Soldaten and the original Off-Broadway production of Big Bad Burlesque. Mr. Herman was in the first national tour of Song and Dance, toured Europe in Broadway Tonight, was featured in the Chicago company of Sophisticated Ladies and began his career as the Purple Panda on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Rocker Verastique
Rocker Verastique appeared in the original Broadway companies of Contact, Chicago, Victor/Victoria and Carousel. Mr. Verastique's other Broadway credits include Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera and Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, as well as the world premiere productions of Heart's Desire, Jekyll and Hyde, Spirit and the Broadway workshop of Fosse. Mr. Verastique's other credits include Paul in A Chorus Line, Konstantine Morrisine in On Your Toes, Sophisticated Ladies, Feld Ballet, Los Angeles Chamber Ballet, six years with American Ballet Theatre, the television pilot and four years on the television series Fame and the male lead in the award winning music video, Nasty, opposite Janet Jackson.

Childcare on Parent/Teacher Conference Day

On Friday, October 23rd we will provide childcare for Parent/Teacher Conference Day from 12pm to 6pm. There is a charge of $5.00 per hour, per child. We will provide an afternoon snack, but there will be NO HOT LUNCH, so each child must bring a sack lunch. Dear Parents,

Recently, each family received a brochure asking for gifts to this year's Pinnacle Project. The Pinnacle Project is St. Francis' annual fundraising campaign and a vital source of revenue for the school. We ask that each family Make an Impact by giving a charitable contribution to the school through the Pinnacle Project.

Because tuition and fees cover only 86% of the school's expenses for the year, we must work to raise funds through various fundraisers each year. The Pinnacle Project offers the biggest impact to the students of St. Francis and funds scholarships, faculty and staff salaries, facilities and maintenance, and student services.

To supplement fundraising, St. Francis seeks foundation support and it is imperative to have 100% parent participation in the Pinnacle Project to show funders that we, as parents, fully support the school. Nearly 50% of funds raised last year were gifts from outside sources, such as foundations, past parents, alumni, and grandparents. As the 2009 co-chairs, we feel that St. Francis offers an incredible atmosphere of learning, family, and camaraderie. To that end, we are hoping to help the school become more self-supporting by looking to you, fellow parents, to contribute to the 2009 Pinnacle Project.

We ask that you simply give what you are able. No gift is too big; no gift is too small. Your gift will make an impact on the lives of the students of St. Francis School.

Chili Cook-Off Wrap-Up

This past weekend, St. Francis 8th grade parents hosted the 4th Annual Chili Cook-Off to raise money for the annual 8th grade trip to Italy. Students, parents, and teachers prepared their best chili recipes to compete in such categories as: Best Showmanship, Best Teacher Made, Best Student Made, Best Vegetarian, Best Student Team, and Best Overall. The event included a jalapeno-eating contest, face painting, and music by bands “Call of Duty-Elite Force” and “The LPs.”

Each year, 8th grade students at St. Francis work tirelessly to raise money to help fund the annual trip to Italy. The trip includes visits to Venice, Florence, Rome and Assisi and is seen as a priority in the learning experience for all 8th graders, giving students a global view that will benefit their education.

The sale will be held at the school on Saturday, October 17 from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm.

We need your donations! Higher quality and value items are especially welcome!

Donating is EASY. Just drop off your boxes and bags of items at school on any Friday morning before October 17th!

Large items (e.g., large furniture) will need to be dropped off at school on Friday, October 16, or can be picked up by us at your home on that day or evening. (We will have a U-Haul truck that day.)
